Economic Development
|

Overview
Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties as a group are designated as an Economic Development District (EDD), and are eligible for program assistance provided under the Public Works and Economic Development Act since May 20, 1994. The program is managed by the US Economic Development Administration (EDA). The South Florida Regional Planning Council is the District’s “Planning Organization,” receiving annual EDA planning funding to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the District and carry out a program of planning and technical assistance for member local governments in creating and/or retaining jobs.

Program Initiatives
The Economic Development District Program will proactively undertake some of the following initiatives:
  • Develop relationships with federal state, local, international and private resource groups and institutions that can provide technical support to the Council and other areas of economic development;

  • Coordinate economic development workshops, seminars, and conferences/trade fairs on topics such as business development, minority business development, international trade, tourism, and environmental issues;

  • Educate local governments and economic development practitioners on the need to develop strategies on a Regional basis;

  • Review, modify, monitor and implement the goals and policies of the economic development component of the Strategic Regional Policy Plan for South Florida and the South Florida Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.

  • Provide economic opportunities for small to medium size businesses within Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties through the use of the Council’s Revolving Loan Fund program;

  • Provide technical assistance and information through the Council’s website (www.sfrpc.com) and the Council’s GIS/mapping services;

  • Assist public and private entities in the expansion of South Florida’s economic base beyond the tourist and retail sectors; and

  • Promote controlled growth and redevelopment of the region and assist in the creation of a better-educated workforce to secure higher paying employment.

CEDS
The Council's Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy provides economic information and technical assistance to local governments, private businesses, and neighborhood-based organizations with respect to the creation and expansion of employment opportunities, thereby maintaining our designation as an Economic Development District.

As the District’s “Planning Organization”, the South Florida Regional Planning Council has updated the 5-year Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the District.  Click the respective links for the CEDS brochure about the update process and the final document of the CEDS, dated September 2007.
