Statewide
Regional Evacuation Study Program (SRESP)
Category 1 Storm Surge GIS Shapefiles for
South Florida
The Regional Evacuation Study for
South Florida (www.sfrpc.com/sresp.htm),
completed in December 2010, used Sea, Lake and Overland Surge from Hurricanes
(SLOSH) data from the National Hurricane Center, along with a digital elevation
model, to produce the Storm Tide Atlas (Volume 7-11), which identifies the areas
of the region that are projected to be under water in a Category 1 storm event.
This study should be used as the basis for meeting the requirements of
House Bill 1359, which amended Section 163.3178 (Coastal Management) in the
Florida State Statutes, calling for a redesignation of the Coastal High Hazard
Area (CHHA) as “the area below the elevation of the Category 1 storm surge
line as established by the SLOSH computerized storm surge model.”
Local governments are required to amend their future land use map and
coastal management elements to reflect the new definition of the Coastal High
Hazard Area and depict it on the map. The
South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC) did not produce a shapefile of
the Coastal High Hazard Areas in the region as part of the Regional Evacuation
Study for
South Florida
. Instead, we have posted below
links to the GIS shapefiles for a Category 1 Storm used to prepare the Storm
Tide Atlas for each of the counties in
South Florida
– it will be up to each jurisdiction to review the data and determine the
Coastal High Hazard Area for their jurisdiction in fulfillment of statutory
requirements.
